Just an FYI for you, sometimes they will look better with 2 or 3 of the little V's. I used 2 for years, but since a few years ago I started using 3 most of the time and on occasion maybe even 4 if no tip is used in like a Gray ghost! If wanting a short tail I am not sure using just the tips may even be better! I have not really looked at hackle in the water near as much as I have marabou, but last time I went out I ended up fishing tight line with a 1/4 Oz jig and some Grande Estaz Chart in color and decided to take a look at it just under the surface so I could see it really well. I did this because if you look at it when it comes out of the water hackle looks pretty much like a small still, LOL! However in the water it open back up and shows it self much like when it's dry except it's flowing in the water. Now marabou in water is just totally awesome and looks like it's swimming if your just barely moving along and hold it so you can see it good, it's swimming! That jigs was awesome in the water and that chenille just sparkles in the sun big time!

So, help a rookie out here,
what am I actually seeing on the tail?
The tip of a hackle and the V that is left over ?
looks great and I'd like to try it.

Okay here is how it works, take a tip as long as you like, cut rest of good part of feather stem in like 1/4" or a little bigger. Then tying lay down the tip and stack 2 or 3'V's on top and then pick them all up and pinch from the side and tie in. I will post link to 2 of my videos, one is the cutting and one is just me tying a jig. I did these to test my camera really and never intended to show them, but they have been a good tool to help me help others.

PS you also get more out of your feathers if you use Salt Water Neck hackle!
