Sand pits? Find the warm water...many have ground water springs that feed them. Is there any structure in the lake? Around here they'll always be moving from deep water to shallow weed flats and back depending on the weather. You'd be surprised how shallow they'll be in the "cool" water months

right now we are catching fish on woodpiles in the 15 to 20 ft mark. our water is stained and around 38-40 degrees. we are fishing minnows with very light splitshot about 18 inches above the hook. once you find a fish, there are more around, just give it a few minutes and fish slow.

Crappies don't always school over deeper water when the water temps are low. Right now, here in PA, we have ice on the lake and i'm catching all my crappies on or near brush in 7 to 9ft water. Find the brush in shallower water in that pit and give it a good look with your electronics. You may be surprised what you find in it. If the pit holds black crappies, they'll be shallow almost all the time.
