Thread: Could Social Media cause the demise of a reservoir?

I get to go to KY lake maybe 2 -3 times a year and Weiss lake once a year. Before I go I look up KY or Weiss lake fishing reports to see where and what is working the best. That said I don't read reports on here and say well I'm headed to Chick or Tellico just because I saw a couple good post. I do like to fish different lakes just to have a change of scenery. My home lakes are Old Hickory and Percy Priest, if I get out and post a report I usually call out what lake and how I was catching them, I've never went out the next day or two and found a bunch of boats in "MY" spot. One of the things I enjoy about fishing is helping others have a good day on the lake, I'm by no means an expert or even close, at best I get out once a month but I have lots of notes to help me zero in based on the time of year and lake conditions. There's always something new you can learn about fishing for crappie, social media is one of my sources to find new ways to put fish in the boat. Right now I would just like to see the weather man say highs in the fifties with cloud cover...

Many of us still work.......that leaves a day here and there to go fish, using the shared info helps many folks enjoy the small window of oppurtinity they have to fish and be a little more successful.

Posting general info in a report helps those of us less skilled enjoy the sport...........Now if you post your waypoints that could well be a huge headache.........But really if you tell a friend about your spot thats hot ten people will know in a couple days...........

Being retired, I came on this site for two main reasons. First and foremost to make new friends and second to learn new ways to fish. I love the hunt for fish when I venture out on a new lake or one I may fish on a regular basis. To me its not about coming home every trip with a full live well.I find myself being on social media way too much in the Winter months but it is something to do due to the fact my wife still works and the cat and dog takes over my lap every time i am in my easy chair.For the last two years I have fished a private lake members only and have enjoyed it. This year I made the decision not to rejoin the private lake and fish public waters instead. I have not experienced some of the things mentioned here such as boats on your favorite hole due to the fact it was posted online your catches from the last outing. We shall see this year how it goes but I say again i am here to learn and NOT steal your favorite honey hole posted online.

I'm not opposed to telling you the lake I fish or the technique i use, but I'll be danged if i haven't had people get mad because I wouldn't be specific about which trees i caught fish from on Reelfoot.

I work myself, 5 days a week most weeks and enjoy fishing every chance I get.

The reason I ask this question was I was thinking of our reservoir(chickamauga) which just give up the new state record largemouth and our crappie fishing is getting better each year. I've seen the number of out of state folks seem to double in the last couple of years. I have experienced what some have said of being followed and think of it as tip of the hat. Maybe I know what I'm doing. What will 10 years from now be like? who knows.

I moved to TN in '05 and the folks on this site have helped me in more ways than I will go into. Showing me techniques and places is a part of it, but without understanding why it works the question remained. I was fortunate enough to be given this, and I share it with others whenever I get the chance. A few years back I posted a pic on the water at a spot I was fishing and when I went to it a week or so later it looked like a parking lot. I don't do that much anymore unless there is so much structure around it doesn't matter, and I've been known to go to another spot and then take the pic. I was always told "Ask and you will receive, take and you will be flattened". Those words came from my Dad and he meant it, and I guess they have stayed with me over the years. They still ring true. I don't think you would take without giving in return, and we all offer whatever it is you need to learn. Your private lake thing is a lot like I was with some small waters, the "one lake, one lure" thing. It's fun but leaves you wanting something more. Good luck this year, I'm sure that you'll do well.

Social Media reduces ones learning cure but I dont think its the kiss of death. Perhaps population increases have more to do with it and I don't see that stopping.
