I bass fished a few years, but never could let go of crappie fishing. Too much good eating, and seems to be a little more laid back to me

I'm 47 years old, been fishing my whole life. Started crappie fishing with my pap-paw when I was 12-13 years old. Got my drivers license and promptly took up bass fishing and tourneys. Did that for years...I used to fish bass Sardis all the time and see maybe 4-5 older fellas crappie fishing. I remember thinking, I'd love to have me some crappie! But, I didn't start back crappie fishing til I was around 30. Every year there were more and more crappie fishermen and less bass fishermen. Now bass has definitely taken a back seat to the crappie.
How and why did this happen? Just have wondered about it for years.

Still a lot of bass action going on just not Grenada like it used to, we used to fish for them all the time on Grenada but low water in Feb and March has pretty much made it a thing of the past. River oxbows and the Tenn Tom Waterway provide excellent bass oportunities but I pretty much dont fish for something I aint gonna eat.

For me, I stated at 4 when Grandpa retired. Caught my first bass at 4 with a cane pole from pond bank. Pretty much stayed a bass fisherman for 50+ years. Got to watching guys jig fishing in Buck brush on a couple of OX bows I fished for bass. Thought that was pretty neat. So pought pole and taught myself to do that and had a blast when they were shallow. Then started seeing guys spiderriging. Thought that might be interesting to try when bass fishing was slow. Had to teach myself how to do all that. Started catching a few and found it relaxing. Then got tennis elbow and lost a couple of rods over the side when a bass would hit cause I had no grip. So got more into spiderriging and found it more fun than the workout I got casting 8/10 hrs a day and eating was a lot better. I think you have a lot of fellows my age who are converted bass fishermen and they have pulled along a younger generation or 2 into it. Plus more press as in this site. Plus bass fishing to me has gotten like trout fishing, becoming an elitist sport plus the costs are astronomical anymore.

Why more Crappie fishermen now....easy, folks got smarter!!!
My biggest reason for crappie fishing is because you can do it one handed. In bass fishing, you have nowhere to put your beer....unless you have one of those beer dispensing helmets.
crappiethon tagged fish with allowed prizes all to discover the great taste . late 80's .
Grew up crappie fishing with my dad in the old delta lakes until they stopped getting fresh water due to the corp lakes. They stayed muddy and contaminated by DDT. He used an Elgin electric motor on a 10 ft boat. We trolled with a cane poll under one leg and over the other stuck out of each side of the boat. He hooked the minnows midway of the back. He always rigged a casting rod with a hotshot on it stuck out the rear of the boat. We were long lining and crank baiting and didn't even know it. I was just a kid when it ended. Fifty years later I started back. Would give anything to fish with him again.
Heck,,, I'm 55 and have fished since I was 5.. We mainly fished for trout, catfish and largemouth in those yankee states back in the day,,, Then I started fishing saltwater the past twenty or so year living back home on Cape Cod,,,,My family all were inshore commercial fisherman mainly fishing fir scallops and pisser clams, and even a few lobster and quahogs as well,,, But since leaving cape cod and coming to Memphis,,, All there really was for fishing were, catfish, bass or crappie,,, well,,, I had already tried bass and catfish which are alright table fair, but the day I tried crappie, I knew it was the fish for me,,, Not only because of how great it tastes, but the journey it takes to getting one in your mouth was quite a chore....... still learning , still fishing and still trying to make new fishin buddies,,,,Crappie.com has definately helped me in all those areas, Even for an Old Yankee Dawg like myself.. thanks!
I've been crappie fishing as far back as I can remember. My grandpa on my fathers side was a commercial fisherman. He made his living catching and selling catfish. My father was mostly a catfisherman but he would fish for about anything. Crappie was always considered top table fare in our house. I got serious about crappie fishing in the mid 70's. We would go to the lake and fish minnows under bobbers. In the spring, we would longline Beetle Spins with split shot weights pinched on the line about 3 feet above the lure. We didn't even know we were longlining. We just tossed the Beetles out as far as we could cast them and run the 10 horse motor as slow as it would go. Caught a lot of crappie doing both. Later, I learned about casting a tube jig under a bobber and slow retrieve. BAM I was hooked for life!!!!
