Default Kentucky Trip February 27-March 1st?

Hey guys I am new to the site. I have fished my whole life but in 2012 bought a 17 ft. bass boat and have been crappie fishing at least once a week since then. I have wanted to take a trip to a well known crappie lake and looks like my dad and I do actually have some time this spring. Only downside is it is very early, Feb 2-March 1. Couple questions if you guys have time:

    1. Would it be worth a trip this early? I understand they will probably still be deeper, but is there a good pre-spawn bite?

    2. Lakes I am considering are Green River Lake (3 hours away ), Lake Barkley(4.5 hours), or possibly Kentucky Lake(5 hours). What are pros and cons to each?

    3. My dad is going to be more a bobber and minnow type fisher than say a spider rigger, even though I am set up. So I have to take that in to account.

    Thanks,

Its hard to say. Lakes could still have Ice and snow could be a foot deep or an inch of ice on the roads and ramps.......or it could be 70 and sunny.....welcome to KY I would shoot for Green River Lake myself and stay at Emeralds Isle and fish that area. I have had good luck there in early march when the weather is good.

If you decide on Green River give me call before your trip. I can give you a fishing report and get started in the right direction.

This was my half last Sunday.

Sounds good guys. We have been leaning towards Green River just because of the distance. I had already talked with Sharon at the campgrounds as well because we will be camping while there. I was just getting nervous about making a good choice and fishing a new lake that early in the season.

I just called my dad and told him about the fish counter and I think he was the most excited I have ever heard him!

I've caught Blacks 3' deep in 5' of water at that time of the yr. You can and will find fish in the bays at Ky. in 12' give or take a couple feet depending on the weather.

I'd try to convince your father to become a spider rigger for the trip and plan on covering some water till you find them. Green will definitely give you the best shot at catching numbers of fish and if the wind is bad, would be a bit more manageable to fish. Careful though, it's at winter pool and drawn down quite a bit. Try to stay in the channels when running.

Thanks again for all the help. We are definitely going to Green River. We will be camping and hoping for nice weather! If anyone is out there that weekend and sees a red 88 procraft, that is me. Hopefully we can get our season started right!
