Fruit jars are definitely a way to get your feet wet. This is my first year at it and we have had a lot of fun so far! The big up side to it is that you learn how and where to fish the different lakes. Just back your ears and jump in!

you have plenty of time to make points. You don't want to wait til the end of the year to get started?
I only make 3 or 4 in a year now but it's still fun.

Plenty of time to qualify for the championship, may not be in the points race but if you weigh in any fish at all you will make the championship.

So you guys think I should go ahead and start doing it?
Is there no benefit to winning the points race as well?
Or is the ultimate goal to fish in the championship?

If your thinking of tourney fishing, you cannot go wrong by jumping into the fruit jar series. It doesn't matter if it's the first tournament or the last. You will make friends and learn a lot. All while enjoying a relatively low pressure environment. In short, the fruit jars are a great place to get started.

the points race is for some prizes for the top 6 and maybe a plaque or sumpin. The championship is a pretty good pay out tourney that you have to qualify for, this varies by number of entries throughouut the year and moneys raised in sponsorship and raffles, last year's payout:
    1st Big Fish paying $500
    2nd Big Fish paying $250
    1st Place paying $1500
    2nd Place paying $800
    3rd Place paying $350.
