I think I know what your calling a mushroom anchor. I have one but my main one is a large flat chunk of lead. I only anchor for Catfishing but anchors work best with enough rope to pull an angle and stop wave action from lifting off the bottom. Side ways pull ( not straight down / on short rope )holds better for me. Also anchor point tied on front / stern of boat holds better in the wind or current.

I use a couple (when I anchor). I don't like to use them in deeper water unless the surface is like glass. If it is windy, the more angle to the rope the better. I have tried them on windy days in my 16' Pan Fisher when a mile of rope would not work. DP

old trick. Tie your anchor to one of the bottom holes of the shroom anchor and then use a wire tie to attach it next to the main eyelet and on up back to the boat. Then is she gets hung up pull real hard and the wire tie will break and let you pull the anchor from the bottom and get it back. An anchor saved is a dollar earned.

Let me be clear that my response isn't meant to be negative toward this quote in any way. Nimrod is an expert fisherman and boatman and has been so longer than I've probably been alive. However, I don't think he would want anyone to think that anchoring from the stern in "swift" current is a good idea. I witnessed a man do this in the little red river in swift current and when the rope ran out of slack water came over the back of his boat stern faster than he could say "OH Crap". Needless to say we had to cut the rope, help him gather up his stuff that floated off, bilge his boat out and tow him back to the ramp.

Guess front/stern should read front / bow of boat . That statement like say positive / negative!
