Smile Big G Night Trip - 24 OCt

Linked up with CrappieSeeker at 2300, and we headed out for a night of fishing. We loaded up and headed to a causeway. We started fishing around 2330, it took us awhile to get aranged in the boat and get rods set up, once all was in the water, I got our first crappie at about 0010. We were not using submersible lights just lights in the boat to see. Fish were at about 7' and mostly taking the minnows under a cork. The bait was thick all night long. It was real slow until about 0500, we were only catching about one fish every hour. The skipjacks and small stripe were thick and really pestered us all night stealing bait constantly. Don't think I've caught that may skipjack before. We did catch a couple of fish on BG jigs during the night. CS was killing it up in the front of the boat once it turned on. (The man is a fishing machine!) When the water movement went slack the crappie fell off but the skipjacks were constant. The wind picked up about 0500 and started the current to flow thru and it started to pick up a little. It got pretty cool with the N wind at about 8-10mph there for awhile. Once it started to get light about 0545, we started picking up fish again. Used Blue Ice, Screamer and Monkey Milk BG jigs at that point. At daylight the fish were pretty aggressive and mostly good quality keeper fish. The crappie were also hitting the minnows pretty good at that point as well. The guys on the bank were doing well too after it got light. The bite died at about 0830 and we decided to call it a night/day. We finished the night with 35 keepers, we only had three short fish all night, but more skipjacks and stripe than you could count. Water temp was 63.8. It will only get better as the water continues to cool. I'd say from this sampling of fish, we are in for a good season this year with the quality of the fish so far.

Headed back to the Super Regional Volleyball tournament today here in Huntsville, after a win last night. If the girls win today, then we are headed to the state tournament this next week 29-30 Oct in Birmingham. Once those events settle, I'll be better able to get a calendar date set around the VB schedule. This is my daughter's Sr year and last year of VB so want to be there to share the expeience with her.

Fished this morning from 3am until 9am at a causeway with minnows and BG jigs also. Only managed 9 keeper crappie, same experience with stripe and skip jacks. Did catch 4 cats on the minnows. Fished this past Thursday night from 6 until 10 and only managed 2. Good to be on the water though.
