Bridge pillars are current breaks, whether they're in a river, creek, or lake ... and they provide eddy water areas out of the current. Crappie like eddy water, so they don't have to expend energy swimming against the current. The concrete pillars also tend to collect algae, which is sometimes fed upon by baitfish. When you combine all the ingredients ... shade, cover, eddy water, baitfish ... then you have definitely found a "Crappie Hole" !!

I don't think so. Not as a food source, anyway.

White Crappie are predominantly small fish eaters ... shad, various minnow species, fry of other species.
Black Crappie are not quite as fickle, eating all of those same "small fish species" plus insects, worms, & crustaceans.

DO keep in mind brush/ trees held in place against bridge pilings create enormous `eddy` or slack water that crappies and many other predators will readily exploit if possible. If you can SAFELY do so, so should you !
