Actually, the hurricanes of 2004 made the crappie fishing take off big-time. They killed the grass and all those crappie were just left wandering out in open water. Where before the grass was too thick to fish well, the open water condition made drifting a cinch. My guide parties could get two limits averaging around 1.5 lbs in 2-4 hours. BUT, too many folks saw us doing it and they got out there dragging 8-10 poles per boat and really put a dent in the population in that open water. You can still do well running the submerged ditches and ditch intersections in Farm 13. Just have to hunt for them and them stop on that area. When they spawn (Feb-early Apr), the south end of the farm 13 section is the place. Work the new grass areas until you get hits and then stop and fish. We actually find the spawning crappie in the south end with bass Rat-L-Traps and spinnerbaits. Crappie are so protective of their spawning areas, they'll hit anything. Lots of hits with no hookups always means crappie, not bass. Then, out come the jigs and small spinners. It is something to remember when fishing other grassy lakes for bass during the crappie spawn.
