Day trip to Como, Mississippi !!Just north of Batesville & right off of I-55, is a small little town called Como..Named after the Lake Como area in Italy, Como is home to the famous Windy City Grille & the Como Steakhouse..
Como's history has included some of the wealthiest people in Mississippi. The Taylor, Swango and Wardlaw families still have descendants in the town. Mississippi Fred McDowell, Napoleon Strickland, Jessie Mae Hemphill and Othar Turner were Hill Country musicians who lived in or near Como. Como is home of Jimbo Mathus' Delta Recording Studio, which records artists from around the world. The town is home to blind sculptor Sharon McConnell-Dickerson, who created life castings of over 50 blues musicians.
Luther Perkins, the iconic guitarist who played for singer Johnny Cash, spent most of his childhood in Como.
Como was the birthplace of western outlaw L.H. Musgrove, who was sprung from jail and lynched by a vigilante mob in Denver, Colorado in the fall of 1868.
Como was the home of the famous writer Stark Young, who was born, died, and spent much of his life there. Young was best known perhaps for his novel So Red the Rose (1934) still considered one of the finer Civil War novels and as one of the Southern Agrarians published in the manifesto "I'll Take My Stand." His love of theatre was evident in his roles of playwright, critic, and lecturer on drama.
Racecar driver Tommy Joe Martins was also born in Como.
