Minnow is a general term used to refer to small freshwater and saltwater fish, especially those used as bait fish or for fishing bait. More specifically, it refers to small freshwater fish of the carp family. They are also known in Ireland as pinkeens.[1]

But, when I lived in Tennnessee fishing Tims Ford reservoir, we used to by minnows called steelbacks for smallmouth. They were big like bass minnows/ shiners, but more durable and lively. SM loved them. Wish I could buy them here.

We have a small pond with some Koi and goldfish. We started throwing our leftover minnows in at the end of the day. Then we see what we can net up when we go again. Oftentimes, we'll catch a bunch of mosquito fish. A bit smallish, but they have a broad head and hold a hook well and seem to live longer than the store minnows. Crappie seem to like them, too.
