I'm going to a group hammock hang the second week of October on Lake Kincaid between Leesville and Alexandria. Never been there before. Any pointers anyone could offer for this lake about that time? Thanks!
We have caught good Blue gill out by the standing timber, and an occasional crappie.
Hammock camping: camping hammocks - Bing Images= A hammock hang is a get together of people who have made the transition from backpacking/camping in tents to doing so in hammocks. There is a forum for that too, and most states have their own "group". They get together on an annual basis and swap hammock knowledge, and for just good old fellowship. Give a camping hammock a try. You may never sleep on the ground again: No lumps or bumps, no deflated air mattresses, no having to deal with un-level ground. This old dog sure has learned some new tricks. When has a tent ever rocked you to sleep? The hammock making "industry" is pretty much a cottage industry, and many who attend are quite the do-it-yourself type who prefer to make their own hammocks, suspension gear, tarps, underquilts (necessary under 65 degrees) and top quilts. Some make hammocks that are more comfortable than those that are commercially available. I go so I can try out other's hammocks, and see the new ingenious ideas that people have come up with. You don't have to actually be camping for one to come in handy. I keep a couple of hammocks in the boat (DoubleNest Hammock - Out of Stock from Eagles Nest Outfitters Inc. - Lightweight Outdoor Parachute Nylon Hammocks along with optional Slap Straps Hammock Suspension.)(buttinasling.com), the size of a grapefruit when stored, and always carry one in my hunting pack. I hunt deep in the national forest, and rather than walk all that way back out after the morning hunt I like to get out of the climbing stand and into the hammock for a couple of hours in the afternoon and take me a nap. Or, if I am still-hunting and get tired I break off the hunt right where I am, get the hammock out and I'm asleep in three minutes. Right there. No long walk out. I wake up and get right back to move and wait. Or just hunt right there from the hammock. If you like being deep in the woods as much as I do, it doesn't get much better than that! Also, while on the lake, if the bite is off and I am tired, I'll take a quick swim to cool off and get in the hammock while still wet. Even in the hottest weather the evaporation will keep you cool for a couple of hours as you recharge for the evening bite. If there is even just a little wind, you'll wish you had brought some covers! If I am night fishing and get tired, and I always do (who doesn't?), a comfortable sleep is only as far away as the shore and two trees. MUCH safer than making a dangerous night run back to camp across miles of stump-filled widow-maker Sam Rayburn or Toledo Bend. After all, they don't call it Torpedo Bend for nothin'...what in the heck is a group hammock hang?
