Default Coffey Co 6/20 with Dad

My dad and I don't get many days off together to hit the water so Friday was a welcome chance to chase them around a little. We'd actually planned on going to Melvern but after both of us fished it separately last week and didn't do so hot, I suggested we give Coffey a try, at least we'd have the white bass to fall back on that way. We really tore them up too. Dad's a walleye fisherman and really wanted to get one to eat, though I wasn't too confident in that happening with the 21" length limit. We got on a spot that a friend suggested and immediately started catching whites, walleye, and then the wipers moved in.

After boating 20-25 wipers in the 4-5 pound range on light spinning tackle, we decided to get back to the walleyes. Dad suggested we pull spinner rigs with crawlers behind bottom bouncers for awhile. We got on one area about the size of half a football field that every time we trolled through at least one of us hooked up, usually both. As we were about to run out of crawlers, Dad set the hook into a much heavier fish. The slow pull and telltale head shakes that ensued finally gave way to a thick 22" walleye in the net

Dad was hoping to catch a lot of fish and get a walleye to eat, mission accomplished! We ended up with those wipers, 30-35 walleye, several white bass, several smallmouth, a few channel cats, a blue cat, a largemouth, a big crappie, and of course a drum.

Great report. My son and I went to Coffee County on Saturday and had a great time. We started with walleye and had good success in the 14-19ft range with crawler and jigs. After catching over 15 (no keepers) we noticed the water boiling out in the middle of the lake. We caught wiper and whites for close to an hour as they stayed on the surface the whole time! Incredible to see and a ton of fun with fish literally on every cast. We ended up with some personal best wipers and memorable smile on my son's face!

We spoke with the gate attendants about the walleye sizes and they indicated that over 1000 walleyes were caught in May with only 26 keepers. Seems like a strong year class that are currently in the 15-19 inch range. I'm OK with the keep and release plan, but it does look like the fishery will only get better in the next couple of years.

    Tight lines

Headed there shortly as soon as my brother gets here. Wasn't that long ago walleye got hard to come by. There were years in the early 2000s it was easy to hit triple digits in walleye caught every day. White bass are always there, just gotta find them. There are a couple spots they are in every time.
