Default Last Crappie trip till fall- Lake Talquin

Made my way to Talquin last week for the last trip of the season. Had a great day on the water. Cought a mess of fish only kept 12 all but one over 12in the largest being just a bit under 16in. Most were caught in 12-14 feet of water Pulling My Brimfisher hair jigs Pink/yellow and Acid rain go the call. Most fish were in the Bell lake area.

Need a longer pair of pliers to shake the gar off my jig!

    Looking forward to fall already.

That is one very fine mess of slabs to finish off the season. I was in Bell Lake about a mont ago and got some nice ones. Anxious to get back to Talquin to seek out some gills and shellcrackers. but the bream bite is very good right here at home on the Choctawhachee River

Wife and I just got back from our week long trip. Caught some nice fish. It was yellow fly HELL on the lake. I've never seen them so bad. Anyone got an idea of what to use to keep them off. Bug spray did nothing!

sorrydog.....I assume you went to Talquin? If so it's good to know in advance The flies over there. We have major problems here along the coast when they are in and according to reports this week....they are here. . It won't be long before they are in the river swamp fishing areas as well. One popped me a couple of days ago while fishing bream on the river. Just recently I purchased a spray bottle of Premium Maxi Deet at Academy. Only place I have been able to find this % of deet. Hopefully it will work. Its 98% . Don't let this stuff get on plastics, mono, etc.

Here is some info published just today by a local outdoor webite

    Bite and sting relief
Here is a general purpose sting relief for yellow flies. It is also helpful for mosquito, chigger and jellyfish bites.
    1 tsp. baking soda
1/3 cup ammonia (Windex is mostly ammonia)
    1/3 tsp. papain (meat tenderizer)
    1 crushed aspirin
Mix thoroughly and store in refrigerator (be sure to label container). When needed, shake well and apply with cotton swab, and rub briskly.
Another recommendation is “Cactus Juice” available at Ace Hardware and For the Health of It.

Personal protective measures include the use of repellants containing DEET (diethyl metatoluamide) applied to exposed skin. Wearing physical barriers such as a head net, long sleeve shirts and long pants are effective protection if you must be out in areas where “yellow fly” populations are high. Permethrin containing products labeled for application to clothing only, can also be effective in repelling and killing “yellow flies”. Thankfully, “yellow fly” season is relatively short, one maybe two months, and then mosquitoes become our major pest.
