    Default Night Fishing Opinion

Went out Saturday evening into the night and did okay. We noticed that as soon as the moon came up the bite shut off completely. This lake is very clear and we were using green underwater lights. Had tons of bait fish swimming all around. We were fishing with wigglers, minnows, crickets, and roadrunners in different colors. We did very well the couple hours before sundown, so the trip was still a success. Is night fishing better on no moon or cloudy nights in your opinion?

The most productive nights for me are the darkest nights of moon phase.

I don't go near as much as I'd like, but the only thing I do on a full moon is catfish. As Locator said, the darker the better.

If it's going to be a bright night? I get into a shaded area around trees, this gives a little more fishing time. As soon as the moon starts hitting me the fishing's done.

Full moon for me is time to bust out the Black Jitterbug and play with the Bass. When light is right and your retrieve is right you can see the strike and at time the bass' dorsal fin will be out of the water 4-6 before it strikes the lure.

Other than that, I like no moon for crappie, bream etc and for walleye, the darker the better and a touch of light can ruin the night. I will usually rig 4-5 poles and no bait changing just change poles.

One thing I have noticed is in lakes with larger predators muskie, Northerns, Bigger Bass and to a degree walleye, the smaller fish will go to bed when predators start feeding.

I'm no expert but 15 years of night crappie fishing under LED lights, I learned that when the moon is out, crappies can see and they are chasing baits elsewhere. It's the cloudy nights that I look forward to. Just my two cents.
