A buddy and I went and fished the Black Warrior right below Smith Lake Dam Saturday morning/afternoon. Was the first time either of us had been there and the first time either of us had ever fished for trout. Unfortunately, we only managed to catch ONE in the 5 hours we were there but it was still a fun trip.

Try power bait in rainbow, yellow or chartreuse on a #12 or 14 salmon egg hook on a 18" 2 lb test leader. Use an egg sinker on the mainline, a barrel swivel and then the leader. Kills 'em every time!! Fish it off the bottom.
We did switch to chartreuse powerbait salman eggs on #10 hooks later in the day per recommendation from the Riverside Fly Shop. That's what I caught my sole trout on. However, I was using an ultralight with 4lb Hi Vis Mr Crappie line with no leader, just a tiny piece of split shot , and on the bottom.
I'll try your setup next time we go which will be soon. We are also going to make sure and bring some ever faithful worms. When we were leaving, a fly fisherman told us he had been using the smallest rooster tail he could find and that had been tearing them up on that for the past couple of weeks.
My uncle once told me to take a hypodermic needle and blow air into an earthworm to fill em up like a balloon, and fish it weightless. He said it'd drive the trout nuts. I can't vouch for the truth of that, but i've always wanted to try it. I've caught the few trout i've caught there on corn, but its a fairly amateur approach. I am going to take my kayak soon and try to catch a few on the fly
The egg sinker works great because the fish don't know you're there until they have the bait deep. Since it's a put and take fishery there, no reason not to take them home for dinner. Powerbait floats so it's actually up off the bottom, fish swim under it and can not resist. The worm with air in them will do the same thing.
Try a fly rod me and my dad went down there last year about this time with our 5 wt fly rods and flat wore them out using a mayfly (willowfly) fly,let the fly float downstream and watch as the trout come up and suck the fly under,it`s fun.Now you got me wanting to go myself.![]()
