That was precisely my point to Brettw. No sooner than you get the latest/greatest gizmo, they're going to come out with an add-on to make it even more "cool" than it was, or they'll come out with even newer technology that blows the previous technology away.

In reality, I was just ragging on Brettw for wanting, then getting, then not being satisfied with, then getting something "better", and then not being satisfied, then complaining about upgrade costs vs results (all in fun, of course)

Personally, I fish out of a boat (my 3rd since the 1970's) and have always had a depth finder of some sort or another since the first boat. My current units ARE "old school" ... in that the one HB 2d b/w unit on the console is probably original equipment on the 1999 model boat I now have. And the newest unit, at the bow, is a Lowrance Elite 5 DSI/Chartplotter ... which is no longer being manufactured ... and I've had it less than 3yrs So, yeah ... I agree with you, wholeheartedly that "old school" tech is better than no tech.

"Boats are great technology themselves. Do we need them? I have heard of guys that have won tournaments from the bank. "

I'd be a whole lot richer but for the bassboats, pontoon boats and high-tech electronics I've purchased, mostly brand new, over the last 30 years. But, I've wouldn't have had as much fun either.

    Gentlemen,
    Today I launched Crappie 1.
Went directly to two spots that my SI revealed last yr.
18 in the live well. So let me say this.
Before buying (admittedly 3 different) SI fish finders, (reselling 2 at a loss of course) , I was actually contemplating selling my boat and just giving up.
I had fished the Chesapeake successfully for decades moving to sc changeed that . And the darned lake here was totally frustrating.
I agree that I was harsh on brand x because it's DI was terrible. No where near the makers claims.
I really like my current ff but I'm always hoping for a better one.
If chirp technology allows me to see crappie in brush and under docks, I think it's worth the upgrade.
Afterall, this sport is to be enjoyed.
Catching and learning is the enjoyment part for me.
I now yield the floor to my esteemed colleagues.

    Oxymoron =

*Fishing from the bank and casting out as far as you can...
*Fishing from a boat and casting as close to the bank as you can...
