The long sad story of this is, in 1984 I got laid off and went to work as the only maintenance guy in a new metal working factory here in Trumann. During the 5 years I was there, I got to repair a whole bunch of welders, both aluminum and steel, stick and wire, aluminum spool gun, and those welders that pushed a larger aluminum wire from the welder itself. I did get some experience mig welding aluminum and steel welding and while I wasn't as good as the professional there, I was adequate for what I needed to do. I ended up designing and building from scratch a "robot" welding machine that increased the production of one of the components by 3 times. They gave me a letter and a travel alarm clock for doing this, so I took the letter and used it as a reference to get another job
. The plant manager loved me like his own son and gave me pretty well free run of the factory so I got to work on all sorts of projects. I did have a few projects that failed, one of these was an auto oiler for one of the punch presses, but that is another long sad story that could have been a major disastor. It goes under the life category "don't do this again".
Now, I do my best to figure out how to do things without welding, but with a welder lots of things would be much easier.
