My Nephew got drawed 3 yrs ago for a Bow hunt. The night before he was to leave he had some buddies over. Well they got to have'n a few Barley Pops and one of his friends picked up his $1300 Mathews bow and dry fired it. BLEW IT UP!!! I'd still be beat'n on that boy.
Anyway... The boy let him take his bow (which was not set up for him and Derrick had never shot) and he missed a 6 by 6 at 32 yards broadside, standing still. On video too!!! Shot just under him.
Son... I've seen this young man shoot a rabbit in the head off my back deck at 50 yards with his bow. No tell'n how many deer he's taken. Needless to say he was PO'd and still gets mad when I pick at him about it!
Go in his house now and try to pick up his bow and see what happens!!! He's an MP and he will throw you to the floor and handcuff ya!!!![]()

Hey Wiskers,I don't know why people like to pulled bows back without the arrow. If someone is looking at my bow, don't care how experience they are,I will tell them not to draw the bow without an arrow. Draw that string back and anything could happen.

Missing out on a big elk like that would make me touchy too. You'd think a guy who had a bow would know not to dry fire! Hope he gets another draw! Slim chance once but ya never know...

Hard for me to say here in Ky as I have never hunted them here. The first year they had the hunt, I told a boy who got drawn to go pre scout his area. He did and on opening day he walked over a small hill from his truck and shot an enormous 6x6 bull that just stood there and stared at him...lol. They put a picture of him and the Bull in the Glasgow Paper that year. It's not that easy in Montana.
My advice, talk to the game wardens in the area you will be going to or whoever else you can that has done the Ky hunt. Ask them for advice. Pre scout the area and look for signs of their travel. Pretty much the same as deer hunting. These cows are big so make sure you can get the meat out quickly and get it cooled down. I always carried meat bags and actually had to debone a Bull one year because it was in such a remote area. You might look at building a game cart like I did after the debone adventure as it sure made it easier to get them out and back to the truck quickly. One quarter of an Elk is pretty heavy to be trying to carry by hand over hills and down them again. So keep mind how you will get it out when you go pre scout the area.
Don't really think you need to be doing any calling since going for a cow, but the best Elk calls I have found are from Abe and Son. A cow call can get them to stop for a shot.
Most exciting hunt of my life was getting between a 6x6 herd bull and a couple of his cows. I would bugle and he would bugle back, and you could tell he was pissed at me. It was a day I will never forget.
My kids never liked deer meat but they would eat Elk. I so much miss Montana for the hunting I did there.
If I can help more please let me know or you can call me if ya want. Just let me know.
Thanks UsaFretired, that is some good info. Sound's like you had a blast hunting for them in Montana.

Time to start scouting.... Darn takes time away from fishing. $ year old female, great eating size - ~150# of meat. Take a lot of fishing trips to put 150# in the freezer so I guess missing a few trips will be worthwhile
