    Default 5/18 Toledo Bend

My dad wanted to go fishing, so decided to take him out to Toledo Bend and show him what strolling / spider rigging was all about. We hit the road at 5:45am and were at the launch by about 6:15.

I realized when we arrived to the boat ramp and there were probably 200 vehicles (trucks & trailers) parked... that I may have not realized that there was a tournament going on..... But the weather had promised to be lovely and they were all gonna be after bass.... so I figured we would be just fine.

We spider rigged and strolled along weedlines, my dad managed the two rods we were strolling out of the back of the boat. Fished from 6:45 or so till 10:30 and ended up with 24 nice respectable toledo bend crappie. Bite really picked up once the fog burned off and the sun got up into the air. fish came in 15-22ft of water, hot colors were a grey ghost little thing that I got from skip at the get together, and acid rain. Picked up a few fish on black & chart, and blue & white.

It was a lovely day and even though it felt a little like fishing in New York city during rush hour... we had a blast.

We spent a little time running around the lake after fishing and i even picked up a few nice brim to add to the mix.

Needless to say i just put an order in with Skip for some more jigs.. :P

Nice catch !! I was there also fishing a friendly good ole boy tournament this weekend. The wind was kicking Saturday. Very rough. In this tournament, you can fish for anything you want. Since the spawn was over, we decided to go after bream. We caught over 100. Nothing real big. We had about 30 "keepers". We kept the others for weight. And we won the heaviest stringer award. Most people bass fished and didnt hardly catch anything. One boat fished some brush piles, but the water was so rough, they couldn't stay long. The waves were breaking into the boat! They only caught 4 or 5.

Anyhow, I am going back this weekend with a friend and the wives. Gonna try white perch and bass if the wind isn't blowing too bad. Might try that trolling technique if I can find some grass.

Yeah saturday would have been a no go for me in my little boat... but the weather on sunday was perfect... if it wasn't for all the boat wakes it would have been flat calm.

Good catch. With that depth of water you must be south where the grass is deep like we were.

My favorite part of the post is 'fishing with Dad'. Take him every chance you can both get away. Glad you caught some fish!

Thanks for the post. Long lining over grass that deep must have been down by the South State Park or in six mile. Nice catch. I'll be heading up there myself Wednesday to work on them. Plan on spending at least one day picking on the bream with crickets just due to the fun mainly. With calm winds I'll work on some brush piles I know as well. Wind forecast looks real good:

There is some deep grass in San Miguel now, I found it by accident, if you can find it, there are alot of fish in it. I caught my limit every day last week on deep grass or main lake brush piles. They were biting in the middle of the day the best on the brush piles. There are still a few spawning in the shallow water but not enough to make it worth fishing.
