Thumbs up Good Eating Places by Hemphill

Connie and I took a ride to check out a restaurant on Texas 21 near the State Line. It is called "Big Momma's and it is in a big white building on the right before the old Bryce's restaurant. It is next to a gas station /conveyance store. They are open Thursday thru Sunday . It is a great place to eat and the people are terrific too. Last week I only had 2 pounds of crawfish because I goofed and inhaled deeply when sucking out the head and got a large blast of spices that caused me to choke and hack and gag and cough and woke everyone up in the building. I made it to the bathroom and was quieter but everyone was still alarmed. I finished eating and all was well. Today we went back and I ate 5 pounds of crawfish, 5 potato's, 1 ear of corn and two cups of coffee. Connie like their shrimp on a skewer and baked potato and different sides. We are really glad we found this place because it is a pretty drive and superior food on the menu but while the crawfish are in I am eating that then I'll move on to other things.
We also went by and stopped at Hemphill BBQ on the cut over road out of Hemphill. Their BBQ is fantastic and the sauce is unbeatable, it compliments the BBQ. I brought home a pound of brisket and half a chicken that made us two meals last week. If you live within 50 miles it is well worth the trip for a Friday or Saturday drive but the hours on Sunday is 11AM-3PM so take a ride and enjoy your meal. Ferdi

Hey Ferdi, we did not care for the spices/rub Big Momma's put on our steaks. We agree it is a nice place and will ask them not to put on the rub next time. Since we live in south La. we normally don't eat crawfish on the road. But can't say I blame you for liking them!! We always enjoy Hemhill BBQ and the coconut pie is the best ever. Just also wanted to tell you the Mexican rest. in Hemphill has great food. Think its called El Patio, by the Dairy Queen. Nice hearing for you!! Thanks, Danny

Hey Fred! When I first started reading your thread and you said you had only two pounds of crawfish - I was thinking, what a light weight . The you said five pounds - that works. That Hemphill BBQ is excellent, and I know my BBQ. Danny is right, their coconut pie is superb. Also about Danny's comment about the steaks at Big Momma's, he's spoiled now because he's had mine that I grill.

Nice hearing from you Fred! The folks really appreciated the rods and trolling motor you gave out at the Toledo gathering. Thanks for posting.

The family and I certainly enjoyed the TexMex place that danny is talking about... I thought the name was El Tio's... but might have that wrong.

Think we might go to Hemphill bbq this weekend as a nice getaway.

Well so unfortunately Hemphill bbq was indeed closed... but the family still had a great day swimming at south toledo bend state park and then lunch at El Tio's... nice little drive through the country there.

Bummer about Hemphill BBQ. I wonder when they will open back up? Danny said they had some sort of fire there.
