One of my favorite things to do is to try a new fishing hole and see if I can figure out the keys to catching a few. Since the recent rains have my old standbys around home messed up a bit, it was time to do just that today. I decided to try an Arkansas River oxbow I found on Google Earth about 1:15-20 mins from the house. With the drive and being in no hurry to face the cool morning temps, I didn't get on the water till around 11am. There were 6-7 boats already there and didn't see anybody catching fish. I talked to a local as I passed by and he said I was a couple of weeks too late and the crappie were few and far between. Trolled down the lake for about 45 mins with not even a nibble and was starting to believe he was right on until "bam" that first pole bent under and the first clue was revealed. It allowed me to slowly put a pattern together and I ended up having a pretty good day. The magic jig today was a Wally Marshal umbrella tube in red/chart on a 1/8th oz #4 sickle head fished 2 1/2' deep. The speed was .8-1mph. Water depth was all over the place with fish beiing caught from 10' down to 4'.
no real hawgs here but a nice limit of average sized eaters and I ran into some more locals in the lake fertilization program doing their part for a healthy fisheries![]()

Seems that just b/c fish aren't being caught by others, that they will sometimes bite with the right presentation! Good job!
