Just plain ole 2d

798 running 2d on a big school of white bass. Notice the jigs going down and the fish coming up to get them. My wife and I had a great time catching them on our ultra-light spinning rods and tube jigs on Lake Martin, Alabama. No interpretation necessary, just set the unit to dumb mode, little fishy appears, drop a jig on it.

I've been told the same thing, but I always run fish symbols on my front unit. I'm usually slow trolling of vertical jigging, so if it shows a fish, it generally is. That being said, I still look for other blips and arches to be fish, as well. I just spend extra time and concentration on the areas that show the actual fish symbol.

That was likely in reference to 2d units mistaking submerged objects for fish & displaying a fish symbol. You're supposed to see fish "arches" (whole or partial) on the screen, when a fish is passing through the ping cone.

Personally, I don't miss the false images that can occur on 2d. I would love to have seen a DSI or DI screen shot of that same school of fish

Some use the "Fish ID" feature in the HB unit to discern which beam the fish echo is in...especially for vertical fishing techniques...

Orange fish will be in the narrow 200kHz 20° cone...
Blue fish will be in the wider 83kHz 60° cone...

So if there were orange Fish ID echoes at 10' down in 30' of water...
And blue Fish ID echoes at 20' down in 30' of water...

The orange Fish ID echoes at 10' down would be right under the xducer in the 20° cone and the baits would need to be set at 8-10' to catch these orange echo fish right under the xducer...

Conversely...the blue Fish ID echoes at 20' down could be several feet away from the boat in the wider 60° cone...and less likely the need to be setting baits at 18-20'....

I would have liked to have seen those on DI or SI as well, but at the time I was trying to get my rod bent as many times as possible and not operating my appliances as I should have been

. I like the little numbers beside the fish. In the heat of the battle, they can be a quick reference. I just wish I would have known what Rickie posted in the above. I'll try to remember that the orange fish are the ones in the narrower cone.
