Default Fishing Mermentau with Son 4/5/14

My middle son came in from LSU and surprised me at the camp last night. Said he was long over due to go fishing. We launched at sunrise at HWY 14 and went north. All fish were within 2 to 3 ft of the bank at 10in deep. River was muddier than last week due to the rain and the farmers flushing the rice fields. We did manage to find 2 canals with clear water and one about half as muddy as the river. Could not get a bite in the clear water. In the canal that had the dingy water we caught fish. We kept 10 sacs, 4 goggle eyes, and a catfish. Threw back a couple of small sacs, a bunch of goggle eyes and a big choupique. Caught all the sacs before 9am and we were heading for the launch by 10am. I enjoyed watching Dylan catch a few fish. I thought he had a huge bass when he hooked the choupique. He was a pro loosening his drag with out being told to when it ran for the middle of the canal. We caught half the fish off one log in about 30 seconds....lol. We had 2 double hookups back to back. He are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure. I even took a few pics of my collies for vet to enjoy.

I figured the rice fields had to be dumping. Guess it will be over for a while now. Saute, you ever catch many in the Streeter canals? I have only fished them a couple of times and only caught a few small ones.

I use to. I grew up fishing Mermentau, Laccassine Bayou, and Streeters. I am just getting back into fishing these areas. I been fishing Big Lake for the past 10 years and got tired of nothing to look at and no shade. I am getting back into freshwater fishing. Past 2 years I been trying to learn the Calcasieu, West Fork, and Houston Rivers. I haven't fished Streeters this year but last night heard of a few catching limits opening weekend. I went to one mile last weekend and was going to try Streeters on my way back but didn't. If I would of gotten the report before I wouldn't of went to one mile. I have never fished Streeters during the spawn. We always fished the area around Coto Plot island in Lacassine Bayou. I usually fish Streeters in the summer. I have had success fishing grass beds shallow and points deep with shiners or with beetle spins. Right now its like Shallow Runner is saying fish hard bank 10 in deep or less.

Great pics! Nothing makes you feel better like all is o.k. in the world than a restful morning fishing with your son!

I do have one problem, however..... That boat is FAR TOO CLEAN!! I can let you borrow my neighbor if you need him---- he loves to decorate carpet with his red-clay covered work boots! Note: water hose and vacuum will clean red clay really good out of carpet......
