Thread: Trailer tire question............

Wow, good question. I guess it depends on how much you use them, obviously, but WITHOUT use they tend to dry rot and crack. I bought good tires last time and have not changed them in 6 years, but I treat them before I store my boat for the winter, and occasionally take the boat on a little 'road trip' a time or two in the winter and make sure they aren't leaking..... Sooooo, that's my take.

My last ones lasted since 2000 and I just changed em a couple weeks ago. Granted it wasn't used very much for about 5 years

My '03 had the original tires on it last yr when I sold it.. They were well used.. Think they have been replaced now..

If the tread is worn down bad, replace em. Inspect em for cracks, if visible, replace em. I never run mine past 5 years. Just asking for trouble if u do..

On my last boat I wore a set smooth out in a little over a year. I use it a lot.

This is just from my experience and class room training on big truck tires for what it's worth, 5 years is starting to push it on the safety side even if they are stored inside. Shorter if stored outside where the sun can get to them. I have replaced most of the tires on my big pickup and boat trailer from dry rot not wear out.

We were full time RVers for 5 years. One thing that was preached all over the country was that no matter how good the tires look, once they reach 7 years you better change them. I learned this early on in my first MH when I blew 2 tires that had deep tread on them. They were 10 years old and had sidewall cracks from sun and age. I now change mine at 7 years, bout cried when I pulled off 6 Michelins that looked almost new at $250 a tire but I had learned my lesson.

A boat tire is not carrying as much weight as an RV but a 12 inch tire at 65 MPH is really spinning so I change them out at 7 years.
If you are only going back and forth a few miles you might can push it, but I have had my fill of blowouts.
