Default Deer hair, to dye or not to dye, that is the question

I'm an amateur as far as tying goes. With materials I can put out a decently dependable product, it's just buying the materials to do so is the the most expensive part of the process. I very much enjoy diy'ing my way with materials as much as I can. My question is, should I continue to buy pre-dyed deer hair or is there a way I could just buy a white deer hair and color it with a clothes dye or koolaid. Any help is appreciated. 😃

I don't see why not, except you might have a hard time finding white Koolaid!

Rit Dye is the most common dye. Koolaid is supposed to work but I've never tried it. Unless you're looking for a specific color or shade I doubt it would be worth your time. I've not seen discounts for plain white tails just because they're not dyed. If you have a freezer full of deer tails like I do from hunting season, then I might look into it.

like Skip said veniards fly tying die we have used their stuff it is good I don't recommend using rit best of this mainly for cotton clothing and I don't recommend using Kool-Aid either it takes a pretty powerful die to do hair with make sure if you try veniards fly tying die make sure that you worship the hair and soapy dishwater to get rid of all Greece and put in a cup of white vinegar this will set the die. also you can get online and try key makes awful good die we use from both companies.

looking at ebay I see no way to justify dying your self. You would spend more for dyes than the finished product cost.

Didn't say it wouldn't work, just it's not the best, that would be Veniards! It is made for fly tying materials.
