Dad had a cinder block frame with a swimming pool liner in it, then a box above with a small pump pulling water from the bottom and into the box to flow back in. Worked like a charm. If I ever get to fish often enough, I may have to rig something like this up, but as it is, I suspect I'd be buying fish to feed the worms most of the time....

Yeah a stressed golden shiner won't live long so there's really a fine line of how long you want to try to keep them. Stress = ammonia. The more water you can get in a tank the better if you plan on keeping them a while. With more water it takes more time for a saturation of ammonia from either feeding them bc you've had them so long, or not feeding them bc you've had them so long. As stated before not feeding them is better. 9/10 times you'll use em up before it's ever a problem. However I've bought so many at a time before that regular water changing and plenty of filters kept the water clean enough that they lived for 2 months. May check on ordering some Black Salty's from Anderson Farms in Arkansas. They will FEDEX them to your door in an oxygen bag inside a box. The deal with them is you can't hardly kill them. Very Stealthy. They're girthy, but so is what a crappie eats. A little expensive, but if you aren't throwing dying minnows out, in the long run it's a wash. Also hydrogen peroxide removes chlorine out of the water. Way cheaper than pet store products. Only need a cap full per 25 gallons.

I use a lot of minnows so I use a 100 gallon tank with about 80 gallons of water. Holds 5-6lbs of shiners well. Click picture for video:

Have you thought about aquaponics. It would be a good way to keep shiners and get a little produce too

This is pretty neat. The fish waste fertilizes the plants. The soil filters the water and provides nutrients for the fish.

Now that's nice - real nice. I like that a lot.
