Good topic, and thanks to all for the tips. I've fished spoons for years for trout and saltwater species, but really never tried them that much for crappie/perch.

Agreed. Good topic. Hysterical...I'm a much better saltwater spoon (sting silver) fisherman than small crappie, but I was going to add that there was a very successful chick river fisherman that swore by the small cicadas and silver buddy's for YP and crappie, but he would remove the trebles and replaces with o ring and red gamagatsus. The fact that fish doc just posted the same tells me it is a legit strategy. Good luck.

I think the key is more the following down instead of the snap the snap gets their attention but if they bite a slake line you will never feel them and unless they are pretty aggressive they wont hold on too long. i use a super sensitive line just for that reason.

Crappiesaurus Rex that used to be on this board would swear by the silver buddies for perch. I miss ole CRex. He showed me the NWR and give me a lot of help there on My first Bash.CF

Doc & genec spanked me last Fall on the spoons. I now have a box full of 1/4 oz Hopkins. I'm looking for a rematch.

Na,when you snap it up make sure you do not have any resistance on line when falling back down, must follow it down at same speed it falls, many times you will not feel it but next snap he is on it,i have use fireline but if you hit big fish or stump it will nearly take rod out of hand if it is fairly stif, and if not stif will not get that reaction strike,so i went back to mono,on siverbullet i fish for bass and stripers but it did not do nearly as good as hopkin, that fast movement is the making of this style bait, but as mention before after snapping it a few times with no strike i will pause it for a few seconds which gets that curoisty strike, and wp loves it

I should have clarified, but I've caught tons of crappie and perch on the silver buddy. It's a great cold-water lure that generates the reaction bite. I haven't found any fish that can resist it. In fact, I've caught plenty of YP and big shellcracker on 3/4 oz. silver buddys. I generally uses the 1/2, but I will go to the 1/4 if I am trying to target panfish.

Sound familiar Bennett??? This is with a Heavy spoon, one that falls just as fast as you can snap it up. I discovered this watching someone that knew absolutely nothing about fishing out catch me casting BGBS and corking a shiner at the same time. Next day when I went back and nobody was catching fish, I let them leave and tore em up. BIG SLABS TOO.

I personallly like an 1/8 oz spoon thats about 1.25" long. I have good luck hopping it up and imediately dropping the rod tip to the water, and waiting for the line to tighten (no bite) or waiting for the line to stay slack (fish on) thats my go to way

Don, I use the 1/4 most but at times a 3/8 CC will do better. But then a 1/2 can also out fish a 1/4 at times. and I've caught several over 2 pound on a 3/4 oz Hopkins, the biggest was 2 lb 14 oz in a club tourney!!! so get ya a bigger box!LOL!
