Default SC Fishing Question from a Military Guy

    Guys,

I am in Columbia on a temporary duty assignment until mid-April. I will be local until then and was wanting to slip in some fishing on the weekends if or when I get a pass.

What are a few good lakes to hit within a few hours of Columbia where I could wet some lines and catch a few crappie.

Also, they need to be accessible from bank unless one of you fine gents wants to treat me to a fishing trip.

I'm missing the fishing season in my home state of Arkansas this spring. Figured I'd treat the itch by fishing here in SC while I'm at training. Thanks for the help.

You have Wateree, Lake Murray and Santee that will be close for you to fish. I hope you enjoy your time here in South Carolina and Thanks for your service.

There used to be some excellent ponds on Ft. Jackson available.
You can't catch fish from the couch.

Thanks for your service and I would be delighted if you would join me for a day of fishing in my boat at my expense. I am retired and usually fish alone so we can do it any day of the week when you can get a pass. Just let me know a couple days in advance and we can make plans to meet. Cal me at 803-429-4889 when you are ready to go. The crappie are just starting to bite after this cold weather we have had so we should be able top catch some. Don

Don, would love to! I think the fishing license is cheap for active military. Cheap enough for me even! Of course, I'll have to pick up a pole or two and some tackle. All mine are left behind in Arkansas. I didn't plan ahead for a fishing trip. My fault. But then again, it's an excuse to buy more fishing tackle! I'll let you know if I get a chance to come out.

Don has 683 different fishing rods so you might not have room for yours even if you took them. I was thinking that military on assignment here either did not have to buy a license or could buy a resident license. Might want to call the SC DNR in Columbia and ask.
Don is a good fisherman and can put you on some fish and he got a new boat last year that is tricked out so I know you will have fun.

You want have to buy any tackle unless you want to I have plenty for both of us. All you need is a copy of your orders to be able to fish in SC and don't need a license to fish. Let me know when you want to go and we will hook-up. Don

I know that SCDNR considers military personnel on assignment for 30 days or more the same as a resident. That should keep your license cost down. Good luck to ya'll and thank you for your service.
