    If you don't use a copper wire to reinforce over the hackle stem, it can get cut and come apart. There is another way to protect the stem if you use some of the UV glue, you can coat the entire hook after the hackle is just tied in and hanging off the back. Then coat it with to he glue, then wrap the hackle I to the glue until you get it like you want, hold it with one hand, set it with the light and then whip finish and cut off excess. Then the entire stem of the palmate red hackle is protected. Don't buy the cheaper light for setting the glue though.

    here is one I did a couple years ago that just used a piece of Lateral Scale to cover the hook amd had the Pheasant tail barbules for the tail and then coated the body with the glue, wrapped the hackle and finished it like I said above. Got this idea from a fly tied by Loon guy.
