    Default Jacksonport AR oxbow

There is a oxbow off the White River at Jacksonport (Newport). There is also a bait shop down there. I was looking for info like the name and phone number of bait shop and more important, what river level does it have to be to launch a boat. What level does the river get out of it. If you dont want to put it on the board please PM me. I always have a empty seat and would be willing to take someone fishing that knows about that oxbow. Thanks

Hey Billy E. I live at Batesville and have fished that oxbow several times because of it's close proximity to my house, But I've never done any good there. It looks great and I know crappie have to be in there some where, But I don't even get bream hits on jigs when fishing cover on the bank in the spring. I've also never witnessed people catching fish there either and I've been at least 8 or 9 times. Last summer I trolled crankbaits there and caught the fool out of gar but that's it. I've fished white river oxbows all my life but that one I can't figure out.

Anyway, I can't answer your questions except to say that I've been there when the water was high and low and never had a problem getting the boat in off the ramp. I do think there is a bait shop in Jackson Port but I've never used it. Now if you're willing to take someone who can tell you about the contour of the bottom and where the deeper holes are ect. but has never had any luck catching anything but gar there, then I'd be glad to fill an empty seat and I would probably learn a lot from you, then give me a call. I'm always ready to fish.

Billy I have fished this lake several times over the years. I live between Newport and Batesville so this lake is close to me. Caught a few crappie but can't seem to catch very many. Like Mac said it looks good but just don't seem to have many fish or I just haven't figured them out. I love to crappie fish but am really more of a catfisherman. I was just thinking a few days ago of getting over there soon and try it. River is real high right now though and may have it real muddy but it is falling fast. I would be happy to meet you over there sometime if you decide to come. I can bring my boat if yours is full.

I have fished it several times over the years. It can be good at times, particularly in cooler weather when the gar aren't as active. Typical river sized fish.

What Jackie says is right, lock even your boat trailer, one of my friends was bow fishing in that area not too long ago came back to ramp to find his trailer stolen. Police found it later cut up at a scrap yard.

I've always heard of it called the cutoff since I've lived in Batesville. The White River stays in it pretty much all the time thru a channel off the river. So it fluctuates a lot. I have drove in from the river several times, because when it gets low the ramp is in bad shape with busted concrete, and wouldn't put my trailer down it, unless a smaller boat. I tried to get in there one dry summer when the river was at 3' at Newport and couldn't get thru the channel.

I caught a few ok bass and crappie there about 3 years ago, back when the water was high and stable about 14' or 12' feet. It's not far from that now. I jigged black and chartreuse jigs, and saw others using the same. Thought I had found me a good place to fish close to home. I fished there last 2 years under same conditions and don't even remember catching a crappie, and I made several trips. Gave up and went other places.

I have talked to a few people from Jonesboro over there fishing and they said they liked it. Heard some folks at work catching a few there pulling cranks, and some big gar.

I haven't had a problem with anything stolen or felt like it was going to be gone when I get back There's a boat dock there with a lot of boats left there and fellow lives right there at the ramp. I don't know of a bait shop.

My thoughts on the place is that there are some crappie in there, but I don't expect much when I go there. But a few good trips would change my opinion. I'll still try it cause it's close and it looks good, maybe just a hit it at the wrong time. I like fishing oxbows. If I get into some I will send you a PM.
