I agree. Have used both but have to say love the side imaging on the hummingbird and that you can now get it to speak to the new i pilot trolling motor. I have the ipilot on my wish list.....does anyone use one now? If so is it worth the money?

I have a hummingbird and it's great. I think it's a 700 series. The larger the screen, the better in my opinion. Depends what's in your budget.
Just installed my Terrova with I-pilot link and have a Humminbird 598C SI combo. Haven't had it in the water yet, hope to finish the boat work I am doing this coming weekend with the warmer temperatures and then the following weekend get it on the water to play with, will let you know how it works out.
As for depth finders/sonars, I have had Lowrance, Humminbird, and Garmin units. Even had one Lowrance unit when down in Florida that had Loran-C tied into it for fishing Okachobee before we had GPS. With todays units, I think it is a toss up between Lowrance and Humminbird as far as down imaging goes. I think you want to look at what other options or features you may be wanting in the unit as well. I went with the Humminburd this time for the Side Imaging feature as well as the down imaging and the fact that with the I-pilot link I could tie it to the MinnKota trolling motor. Thus the reason for the new 598 and terrova, in the past I have only run Motorguide trolling motors, but had to try out the new toys. I know Motorguide/Lowrance probably have a similar feature to the I-pilot link, but MinnKota/Humminbird just made it to easy and cost effective. My $.02, YMMV.

Most everyone says Lowrance has better DI pictures due to the dedicated crystal for this in the transducer. Humminbird used the SI crystals and processing to make the DI picture. I run Humminbirds here and they work very well for finding fish. Even though I do not spend much time screen shooting the DI view, here is one of mine to look at from a humminbird 798. Red arrows are crappie on some underwater standing timber and the green arrow is an egg sinker on its way down to get another fish. I think the humminbird non-side imaging units that have down imaging may have a better picture than the Humminbirds with SI, but from what I've seen, the Lowrance is the king of the hill.

I got lowrance front/back and am very happy with it. Very good pics for me with little adjustments to settings.
