    Default Hillsdale 1-6

Fished hillsdale this morning. I was surprised to see a lot of open water on the middle of the lake with a thick layer of fog over it this morning. The ice was 4" thick at marysville, the fish were plentiful, but no size. Had to work fast as the fish were ice blocks in 5 seconds. Caught them on a Swedish pimple with a gulp waxworm down 25' on brush. Once down it never took more than 45 seconds to get a bite, but spent a lot of time battling iced up equipment. Wish I hadn't left all my ice fishing gear in Nebraska when I moved. No ice auger, ice hut, ice cleats, ice rods, ski goggles, marcum lx5 flasher, or even my ice dipper. Just my pac boots, a spud bar, lots of warm clothes, and my 7' ultralight rod. Stayed toasty warm, been out in way worse but this is my new ks record for coldest day fished.

It really isn't bad if you have the right clothing. I have a parka that is virtually impermeable to the cold. Couple that with pac boots rated to 110F, some warm bibs and a pair of heavy coveralls on top of it all and it really doesn't matter how cold it gets.

Thanks for the ice depth report. Goose hunted by the dam there Sunday. Big area of open water was really rolling out there. Gulls were diving on the open water cross from the marina. Coves been frooze for a while. Was wondering how thick the ice was. Lot less open water out there tonight. Supposed to get to -4 tonight, and the wind is going to lay down. Should make a lot of ice. May freeze over. Buddy's said the slip was fishing well there last week.

Fyi there is no hunting allowed basically from the wind surfer beach headed south around to the boat ramp in wades branch.
