The tension adjustment screw will help, but be careful not to get it too tight. It is meant to take the "slop" out of the footpedal. Getting it too tight will cause the pinion in the shaft to pull toward the cables and premature wear on the upper bearing. Check the alignment of the trolling motor on the boat. If it is not straight up and down with it in the deployed position when being used, the torque of the motor will cause it to swing.
