The part that takes a lot of time is aging the fish. They have to take a bone out of the ear of the fish and put it under a microscope to get the age. They will catch a thousand or so fish and it just takes time to do the grunt work. I'm not sure if they keep all thousand, but they will keep a sampling. Spring is the busiest time of the year for them, so they will spend nice-weather days out in the field and rainy days back in the lab.

I wish they would survey the fishermen. I saw a bunch of fishermen at the 64 bridge and they didn't seem too busy. We caught several small white perch and a couple crappie. One was a 12 inch fish that fought harder than the two fourteens I've caught.
