Default McCrappie Lake Fork TX Crappie

I was invited to fish in a bass tournament this past weekend at Lake Fork in Texas. Yes, I would have much rather been crappie fishing here in Arkansas but it was work related and had the opportunity to fish with a great bass fisherman and friend that I work with in the electrical industry. One of our techniques to catch monster bass was to throw a 4" watermelon red lizard next to old stumps in 10-15 ft of water. As the line moved or the feeling of a small thump we set hook.... what was on the other end..... slab crappie!!! Wow, I was pumped and curious of why I was catching slabs on this bass lizard bait. Hit me back with your thoughts... I think the crappie were on their beds and carrying the bait off the bed and away from the eggs. Anyway, just thought my Arkansas crappie.comers would find this interesting. Thanks for looking ~ McCrappie Name: lake fork crappie 2013.jpg

Nice fish, if you inspect stomach contents you would know they don't always look for small morsels. They don't have that big mouth for nibbling on knats.

Bass fisherman catch some if the biggest crappie caught each year , they just don't catch numbers, big crappie like big baits especially in the spring, I hear of fish being caught on big spinner baits all the time!

I tend to agree with this, especially the big baits in the spring. On certain lakes, I use 3" plastic crawfish on a standing jig head. Has to be pitched up in the brush, but you better hang on. This tactic works great for me until the water starts heating up and the crappie start looking to move out of the shallows.
Crankbaits are the same. When I first started pulling crankbaits, I was shocked at how big of a bait a crappie would hit.

What Crappie Greg said is true.. I used to be a bass fisherman until I understood how much harder it was to catch a crappie! Didn't take me long convert! Big crappie will bite as big of a bait as a small one! Big crappie don't hang around the dinks much. Move
