Question of the week: Trolling with horse head jigs

I have never trolled with them but I must have lost a ton of them over the years, well maybe not a ton but I'm perty shore I have lost at least a pound.

For y'all the do troll with them, I would like to find out:
- what weight do you use and what kind and color of blade do you prefer
- do you use it by itself or above or below another type jig.
- is there a particular time (pre spawn, spawn, or post span) when they
seem to work best
- do they seem to work better in clear, stained or muddy water
- and finally, do they seem to work better in shallow or deep water?

Have at it boys, inquiring minds want to know!

I don't use them often, but when I do it is usually this time of the year when the fish are shallower. I'll fish with the 1/16th and the 1/32 oz, depending on just how shallow the fish are. CrapSlabStu down in FL fishes them just about all the time and he fishes exclusively with Lightwirehooks. Lightwirehooker fishes with them about as much as anyone I know and maybe he'll chime in with his

I use them on 2 rods each day and if they get more bites I add more. good in dirty water for vibration. good in clear water for flash. they run a bit deeper. I have willow leaf and regular in gold and silver. silver is best for me. Also the willow leaf ticks as you troll
I use them any time the troll works in any depth

I troll with them all the time when the fish move up to 3 to 12 feet. Most of the time I don't use a blade on them but sometimes I do and it seems to make a difference. They usually have a big hook on them and that helps with fat baits. Wes

I went fishing yesterday and drug single and double jig rigs with every combination of colors I could think of all over the lake and didn't get a strike. Around 2:00 I tied on double jig rigs with 1/8 oz. Road Runner heads with Colorado blades, one chartreuse with an acid rain/chartreuse curly tail grub and the other orange with a junebug/chartreuse curly tail and about 2:30 at practically the same time I caught a channel cat on a Road Runner on each rod. The largest was 4 lb 9 oz and the other was just over 1 lb.

I didn't get another strike the rest of the day and probably hung up and lost eight or ten Road Runner rigs. I don't know what I learned other than channel cats will hit a Road Runnner.
