    Default Report 5-1-09

I had a buddy that doesn't fish much call me earlier in the week to see if I would take him fishin'... I told him that I would be glad to. He didn't have a fishin' license so I decided to hit a private 200 acre lake near my house. We were on the water around 0730 and the wind started blowin' at 0731 :D:D:. The water temp. ranged from 68.0-69.3 degrees. I hadn't fished this lake since the beginning of February so I thought that I would start out letting him long line so that he would be able to reel a few in. I got him set up and I started spider rigging out the front. We caught several small crappie in the 6-9" range and when I cut across the creek channel to hit another cove one of his rods doubled over... he set the hook and reeled in a nice 13.25" crappie. He was pretty pumped up because it was the biggest crappie that he had ever caught. We kept trolling and about thirty min. later as we passed by a shallow point another on of his rods doubled over... he set the hook and reeled in the fish of the day, a solid 15" pig! You would have thought that he won the lottery... "Whew, Yeah, Whew, look aty this crappie, Whew, Yeah". Most of the fish that we caught today (except the 13.25") were in shallow water so we finished ther day out jigging in some brush piles. The fish that we caught out of the brush seemed to want the jig sitting still tipped with a minnow. We had our best luck on Kalin's Triple Threat John Deere Green and Kalin's crappie scrub tipped with minnows. The 15" crappie was caught on one of the bucktails that mikeb made for me tipped with a minnow! The total catch of the day ended up being 23 crappie, 3 bream, and 3 LMB. My buddy is now hooked for life... he is already asking when he can go again!!!

What a way to start out. Great report. Did you weigh the big one?

My hand scales said that she only weighed 1 lb 13 oz. I want to take the fish and have the weight certified because I have caught a 2 pounder that was 15" and a 2 lb 3 oz that was only 14.75". I thought that the 1 lb. 13 oz. was a little lite but it could be that she had already spawned out or that my scales were off. He wants to have the fish mounted so I guess I will never know about the eggs.

Good report and good day, Blake. If I caught a 15" crappie I'd be totally pumped, too! I've caught so many "almosties" this year that its not funny, I'm beginning to think I'll have to go to the James to get the 15' one this year. John Deere Green is an awesome color for almost any situation. Take him agai soon before it wears off, then, he will definitely be "hooked"!
