Bad Day on the Poor Monkey
I headed down to Lester Manor and put in on the Pamunky Saturday around noon so I could catch the outgoing tide. This was my first and last time launching at that ramp, it is the worst I've seen managed by the VDGIF. At low tide the ramp ends at the water and the hill is so steep getting out that everyone spins rocks all over your truck if your parked in the wrong spot. I saw one guy fishtailing and spinning tires up the hill leaving and he slid sideways into some guys van parked alongside the road because there is no parking provided. Eventually he had to back the boat up all the way to the ramp to get a running start up the hill so he could get out.
I was hoping to catch me some of them citation ring perch I've been hearing so much about on here lately but Big Creek wasn't good to me and all I ended up with was a bunch of white perch and a BIG Ol nasty bowfin at the end of the day. I caught all the perch on mepps #2 spinners and the bowfin came on a little crank bait. I tried fishing the spinners deep and shallow from the shore to the middle of the creek but no ring perch were to be had. Maybe one of you guys can tell me what I was doing wrong. Also for any of you more experienced Pamunky river fishermen what is the best way to get out of Big Creek at low tide? I was real close to getting stuck on the way out. I searched for a channel on my way in for about an hour but could not find any water deeper than a few feet.
