Default Saturday-Buggs-14 crappie but one length citation

I figured if I drove 2.5 hours to go fishing I would be able to force myself to stay on the lake longer as that's too far to drive for a short trip. Even though the bite was slow I did stay for just over 8 hours which is the longest I have stayed on the water since my wife passed. The water was very muddy with lots of debris. I started in Eastland and could not buy a bite. (before anyone says it's too early for Eastland remember that Carl Herring caught his 4lb 8oz crappie in Eastland this time of the year) I then ran to Panhandle where I got 7 including this 15.5" white crappie that weighed in at 1lb 14oz. (I am sure it would have topped 2lbs had it been a black crappie)

It was caught with a 1/16oz Cajun Cricket BGBS counted down to 20 and reeled in real slow. I probably should have just hung around but figured I would try other spots and headed to Island Creek where I got 7 more but they were all right around 10". All 14 of my crappie were caught 15'-20' down. I returned to Eastland in the afternoon and tried the shallows with no bites. Main lake was around 42 degrees and even with temps at 49 in the back of a cove I had no takers.

The seagulls were everywhere and I saw a lot of shad swimming around which the seagulls were feeding on.

The way conditions have been, you did pretty well. I'm glad that you got out on the water. I hit Hertford today and did everything that you can do, but the crappie were scarce; 5 keepers and 3 dinks. The brim were mixed in with crappie and were grabbing the crappie bites constantly, annd if it wasn't the brim, the darned LMB were aggravating; probably caught at least 12 of them. I had some minnows, but didn't even try them. The crappie are there, but they must be not be over all the screwy weather that we have had. Water was 49 to 53. If we don't get any more real cold shots, the spring bite is just around the corner.

Tap, I'm praying for you every day; keep your faith in the Lord and He will will be your strength.

I'm glad you were able to get out and that's a nice crappie! I'm just curious what kind of scales you use? I have been wanting to get some I could take with me... Had my eyes on a small rapala scale just didn't buy it last time at bps...

Out of a good report (at a rough time of year) with a great highlight (citation), this simple statement was the best news of all. It's good to see your appetite for life is improving. Carpe diem.

I use this Rapala scale. Maybe I am wrong but you would think that with today's technologies that these scales should be pretty darn accurate.

Tap,glad to see you got some decent fish, roy and i got there about 9:30 in bluestone, roy caught a good striper and white bass and a couple of crappies and i had a nice bass and a crappie so we went to buff for rest of day, well it was tough there also,so we quit trolling and started fishing,we wound up with about 50 but by no means were they good size fish, most crappies were small, with a few still having the egg shell still on them, lol.had a good time ,glad you got out and you are still in my prayers

Great report George!!! NO it not to early for Eastland this time of the year. It seems that the fish follow the bait in the back of the creeks on these warmer days. All my fishing buddies start hitting the back of the creeks around 3 P.M till dusk. 5ft or less.
