Corn too wet to pick today so I hit the water from 3 PM to 6 PM. Caught 20 crappie. Kept 13. caught one 8 pound catfish, 1 snaggeled tooth jack fish, 2 nice white perch. Caught crappie on brushpiles and all but a couple tightlining. Casting was not getting it done today even though all the oddball fish were caught casting. Bluegrass was the best color today also although pink/white held its own. Didn't get much time to fool around and try any other colors. It was all business as soon as the boat hit the water. I wanted meat for the table. Mission accomplished. May go again Sunday if the grain elevator is closed. Should have gotten out last week but had a bunch of crap come up at home that I had to get done. I hate having to deal with a wad of minor emergencies and also wait on contractors to show up. Only One came when He said He would. Killed all my free time up that could have been fishing time. So I stole one out today. Fished Pembroke again as it is about the closest good crappie spot that I have.CF

you gotta steal a fishing trip once in awhile,plus you put you brought home the bacon.saw some corn being picked up my way yesterday in a couple different fields,i been checking for doves but none to be found.the crappie are biting good though.good luck Sunday

Way to get it done Farmer, Wes I had the pleasure of joining a group of guys hunting dove over a sunflower field Monday. Most fun I've had in awhile. I had 3 my dad got 4 the group had 60-65 birds... Good times and good eats.

Farmer I did notice last Sunday the fish wanted a tightlines jig... Strange because I've been catching in big numbers all summer casting...

Way to go, good to see you got some fishing in. I was thinking about you yesterday, went to the Eastern Shore to do a house inspection. They were picking corn, stuff looked like it was 10' tall. When I hit the lottery tomorrow night you can come visit me here 2238 Arlington Chase Road, Cape Charles VA - Trulia. Four miles off Rt 13, 1/2 mile gravel drive, I saw one car after I turned off Rt 13. The lake is full of bluegills, saw a couple that looked be over a pound.

Last time I went dove hunting, it took two boxes of shells to get my limit. I have not been in several years. We plant a 5 acre sunflower field every year down by the sound. Draws birds like crazy. I really like watching Dad shoot birds. He shot 80 last time we went to my limit. The man don't miss. He grew up duck hunting and quail hunting before those evil four legged woodsgoats showed up. He used to out run the warden on a regular basis.CF

Wish I was that talented! I was 5 for 27! Lol Well three in hand two were gliders that got lost in the woods edge. The soybeans ate a few of the other guys birds as well. I just wish I had the land to plant enough sunflowers to hunt. But was more than grateful to be given the opportunity to be invited. This fellow sure had a beautiful game preserve... 1500 acres of prime hunting and fishing land.

Dad hunted Mattamaskeet a few times but mostly hunted the swamps around home. He said there used to be so many ducks and geese at Mattamaskeet at times that they would blacken the sky. They were thick in the Albemarle sound back then too so all he had to do was hunt the sound shore and the swamps and would get plenty of ducks and sometimes more than he should have. He would get in trouble with a game warden on his tail from shooting too late. Never got caught.

back in the early 70's ducks and geese used the fields a lot too. don't see that anymore. Grain was picked later than it is now and there was more of a food source that they could utilize in the fields then.

I remember a when I was a teenager, the Sound completely froze over. That has only happened a couple times in my life. There were some small pockets of open water and one just happened to be down the sound shore from our shop and there just happened to be a couple gazzillion ducks and geese using it. This was long after the hay day of waterfowl in the sound. It had snowed and was around 2 feet deep. Dad and I snuck down the field along side the sound shore through the snow and caught them right where they were coming into the fields from that pocket and wore their tails out. There was no season in. We just took advantage of a situation at 2 PM in the afternoon and put some birds on the table.

While we were there, huge sheets of ice started shifting in the sound from the wind blowing across them. The sheets were making a massive roaring sound as they moved. The were also hitting some old broke off wooden pylons in the water and ice was shooting up in the air off of them about 20 feet. That was wicked and a day I never will forget. My Dad was younger then than I am now.

Now as far as shooting dove, I am about like you. I have a sore shoulder the next day if I get a limit. Go through spells where I could not hit the ground if I shot at it. But never seen anything like Dad. nothing for him to unload on them and get 3 birds. When a bird was whipping through the shots of several guys, it never made it past Dad. If it was in range, it was a dead bird. The man was a machine.The only weird thing I ever did was shoot two with one shot. They criss crossed just as I pulled the trigger and nailed two of them in one shot. That was pretty cool.CF

You were almost in luck there Don. trailer tire was half flat at the shop the other evening when I got back and by the time I got the fish out of the livewell, was completely gone. Went to get one yesterday and man said it would be Monday. So I figured unless I put the ragged old spare on, there would be no chance of fishing Sunday. But at 4 PM yesterday, Man called me up and said he found one and that it was already mounted and ready to go. So if the corn ain't dry enough yet, Your SS might dry up before I get back to work. You better start fishing hard now so You can keep some food on the table until I can get back to work. I don't want to see any pics of You with a swollen belly and a fly on Your lip. you Old Fart.CF
