Evinrude 9.9 prop question

Just noticed this on my prop yesterday.

When I pull the prop out:



What the heck do I have going on here? Motor still works fine and pushes me along at 19mph.

Does it work properly in reverse? You may have had a retainer break on the prop shaft. It's held in position in forward gear. With the motor OFF, put it in reverse, pull it back and try to turn it. That much travel should disengage the gears. At any rate, it isn't normal and should be fixed.
Also, check your prop hub.

Pull prop. Behind prop should have a retaining ring that screws in with spanner socket. It holds bearing housing in. It could have backed out or some thing has broken letting your prop shaft slide in and out. What ever it is, is not good. Don't need to be running it like that.

Looks like you are missing the thrust bushing George. It goes on before the prop does.

First thing I would do is to drain the lower unit and see if there are metal shavings on the mag plug or in the oil. My guess is that bearings might be gone. It's easy to pull the lower gear case and see exactly what is wrong. Here is a good diagram that will show the parts (you will have to put in your exact model) and how they interact. If you want some help, I'll be glad to help you fix it.

Yes it works in reverse. It's the shaft that I can pull in and out. Not sure why.

The motor is from 1996, I guess it's bound to have issues.

Bearing or thrust washer worn or broken. I would suggest you not use it until it is repaired.

If you don't fix it, one of these days when you pit it in reverse, all those loose parts will exit to the rear and find their way to the bottom of the lake. Happened to a friends prop once when he lost the nut.
