There's no compression between the shaft and housing. Part 415 is the motor-side of the union. It mates with the depth collar (part 305) which performs two functions. In addition to the traditional function of setting the motor depth, half of the mating end is cut away to match the cut-away upper end of Part 415. The parts diagram provides too little detail make much sense. Here's an image of the mating collar, but it's shown upside down. Installed on the motor shaft, the slotted end faces downward, not upward. When the motor turns, the base half of the union drives the depth collar, and the collar is a tight fit to the shaft.

It appear to me that 410 through 440 that shalt goes through these and motor and gears 380 and 385 reduce to turn gear 435 on shalt . Gear 380 and 385 are not in shalt but in box that motor is attach to. May be wrong without description of parts

Duh, you are right. I was overlooking the obvious. Mystery solved.

You won't overlook that connection if you lower the motor without dropping the shaft down into the mated position. Sooner or later, the collar will work its way around and fall into place like a sledge hammer.
