Thank you. Looking through this board, it seems like a good group of folks

Welcome to the board. We do have a good group of fishermen. You'll come to love that lake, especially since you pretty much have it to yourself!
Better do all the catching you can before the access lets in the hoards. Hope this means some stocking as well
Ah, I live on a different part than the ramp. I've been catching tons of crappie this year so far though.
Good to hear Cody. Any size to the crappie? Anything else in the mix?
My average out of all the fish combined is over 13". I've missed the 15" citation by less than a half inch at least 10 or 12 times now. Also caught a bunch of bass, pickerel, blue cats, perch and 1 gar. I see HUGE bass like 8lb plus jumping all the time but can't get them to bite anything.
I just kayak fish it because I don't have a way to get my boat in the water at my house.
I've responded to questions like this in the past. It sounds like you know that you can launch at Little Creek Reservoir and head north and through the Van Wyck Canal under Diamond Springs Road. However, you are most likely restricted from getting under the railroad bridge with the lake level at the current elevation. IF you could get under the bridge, you would be in Lake Whitehurst near the old boat ramp.
A new ramp is planned for Lake Whitehurst at the corner of Heutte and Shore Drive. However, this lot is owned by Dominion Power and their project took longer than expected, delaying the our project start. Hopefully, the ramp will be open later this year.

When they open that ramp, I kind of hope the fish migrate over to my section of the lake. Haha
Fishing on the main lake has been slow so far. Only targeted Bass and the catch rate has been brutal. Live shiners are the only thing working so far. I did have a 35 lb. cat on the other side of the runway a few weeks ago. By my self and couldn't get the photo. Good to see some new activity on this thread. Good luck to all as the weather gets things rolling. Your Pal, Brad
Man I've been seeing bass jumping in lilly pads that are easily 8 pounds, but when they are jumping like that, I can't get them to bite anything for the life of me. Haha
Not to doubt you Cody, but my experience has shown those fish jumping in the pads are carp. I've seen it in that lake along with Little Creek and Smith for almost 20 years. Wait til the carp start spawning, that's a sight!
Could be. I've definitely saw some carp jumping too. I pour deer corn out in the little sloush in my yard. The carp come though and eat it and clean up all the leaves and junk on the bottom too. Keeps it nice and clean
I,m on a finger of the main lake across from the Botanical Gardens. In about 2 Weeks those carp will light up out here. Too much ruckus to pay attention to what else may be active out there. I wonder if that may keep the Bass out of this water as well. Any thoughts out there? Your Pal, Brad
I don't fish that side much because I have to go to the end of my side and carry my kayak across Azalea Garden Rd, but I've always done really well along the bank of the Botanical Garden. I'm not sure about scaring the bass off though. In 2 weeks, the bass should be on beds I'd think.
The bass have been on the beds for almost two weeks. They will continue to spawn til the end of May, some maybe even into June. I, too, believe that once the carp start rolling in the shallows that it affects the bass. I have nothing scientific to back this up, just an observation I've made over the years. I generally don't do well with bass where I find a concentration of carp. Luckily, the carp aren't on every bank all the time.
I was just guessing on when they will hit beds. I haven't fished in a few weeks. I had ankle surgery and I'm not allowed to walk for another month. I hate that I'm missing prime fishing time. My friend caught several at my house yesterday.
Fished last Sun. On the water at 6:15 and not a bite until the sun came through. From 8;15 to 10;30 had 5 Crappie, 4 Bass and 2 White perch. White Spinner baits and white paddle tail worms were the ticket. Promise to the wife finished the day. Oh so little time to fish....... Your Pal, Brad
I've just been trolling in my kayak with little silver Rapala minnows. Been catching a bunch that way
It's been awhile, but I'm back on whithurst. I'm trying to get in some really good fishing before the madness begins when the ramp opens. By the looks of it, it'll be done by this summer if not before. We've had one really good evening with the largest being a 1/4 ounce shy of citation. Crappie that is. However we haven't really been able to get on them as good since. Any reports or areas of interest to check out would be appreciated. Thanks.
I fished there from 1965 till they closed the ramp, most fickle spring time place to fish there is. Just when you think the spring bite is on one of these Nor'easters blows in and shuts them down. After the sun shines for a day or two with a south wind find an area the wind has been pushing warm water in, look for emerging lily pads, fish the outside edges and any stickups around them. If you can get under the bridge to the canal, that's a good early area to try. As soon as the ramps open I'll be out there, I really miss it, and now I. only 5 miles away.
I tell a story I've told here before. In the early 70's my buddy and I use to fish there and on the other side (Little Creek), launching a canoe from my sister's. We used to buy minnows from Capt.'s Smith's Bait Barn on Shell Rd. Every time we went in the old guy dipping minnows would show us a couple citation size crappies he said he caught on the way to work paddling his canoe, ask him where, he'd just point at the lake. So my buddy started getting up before dawn and started stalking him from the woods. He says after a bunch of times doing that " that old man is BSing us, I never even seen him catch one fish." A few years pass and my buddy comes in with the news paper folded to an obituary for one Carlos Hathcock (google if you have too!). My buddy says that old guy knew I was stalking him, and I say yup and you're lucky to be alive to say that.
That is a very interesting story, thanks for shareing. I have a few friends from the local sports bar that will find that a hoot! I have not launched the boat this year......YET. Have had some left over honey doos but now the time to get serious is at hand. Have had a few bass off the dock, the lilies are just starting to come through and the water temp is rising. Should have a post after this weekend. Good Luck to all.
ramp,getting thereAttachment 294548
The last 10 days have moved the water temp to 58 and the fish are responding. Crappie to14" and a fine representation of large mouth as well. Fishing pressure is light as usual but will increase with the opening of the new ramp. Ramp is getting closer by the day. Se you guys soon!
