opinions on high vise lines

Gene ... I don't know as the fish are looking so much at the line, as they are looking at where it breaks the surface of the water ... like a bug would do. I've even had them come up to where my line entered the water & bite at it ... but never had them nip at the line that was under the surface. They've even bit at clear lines (clear/blu Stren - BPS Excel) back when I used to use them. That's why I say that fish are not spooked by line, or line color, as much as they are by other factors that are happening at the same time. Do we really think that fish don't see lines of all sizes & colors, not only from active anglers ... but, think about all the broken off lines, hanging around in and among most of the cover that they use. If they were spooked by lines, or line color, they'd likely starve to death from being too spooked to move. :Doh:

And what about "back when" ... before there was such a thing as monofilament lines, of ANY color ... when most everyone used black nylon fishing line !! That obviously didn't spook very many fish, else our grandparents would have never caught very many fish, if any.

Fish know the line is not something to eat, so their attention is focused on what we have tied on the end ... the "something" that looks like it IS something to eat !!

Cp,i don't think line spook fish ,thats why i use it all the time,and i many times have had brim to hit line where it surface water,but as i watch this fish ,he kept his nose touching the line up and down a few times and was not concern with where it came out of the water, i just was wandering what he was trying to do,i realize that they do not think ,as we use the word, but what or why he was doing it

I use Mr. Crappie Hi vis 4 lb. In the past I always used Stren Blue mono. After several years of Crappie fishing I can not tell any difference with the fish seeing the line. But being able to see the line sure has been execelent for me! I believe the Crappie would bite a jig tied to a chain. As a rule I single pole fish 99% of the time.

I use Sufix 6lb Hi-Vis Yellow. I special ordered a 3,000 yard spool some time ago but I'll give Vicious Hi-Vis a try.

Well, I seem to be outnumbered, and outfished. I would disagree with the statement that "in SE Virginia there isn't much clear water". You would be surprised just how clear our "blackwater" is. Try some snorkeling sometime and, while submerged, look up. I have always used a moss green line to try my best to blend with the blackwater that I fish (the upper Chick). Having done the snorkeling experiment, my boat is also finished in marsh camo. While I am just getting my feet wet with crappie, I have been bassin for decades and my belief is that, especially in fall, winter (when there is little planton and algae in the water) and in shallow waters, these things contribute to more big fish in the net. Remember, they are the big ones because they have not yet fallen to some angler.
Then again, I could still be all wet from snorkeling! :biggrin

George I have a 1/4 lb spool of 4,6,8,&10 Next time we get together ill let you spool off mine and let me know what you think.

I use hi vis berkly nano 8 and 10# now, I will switch out all my reels to this as it ages wears out. I always liked trilene XL6# and it had so much stretch the fish had to run at least 6 feet to pop it, it cast very well BUT compaired to the Nano there is no comparison. The nano is so strong and such a fine diameter it cuts through 20feet deep water better than all I have tried.

I do think the boat color makes a greater impact on fish.

I think boat noise plays a bigger role than color... Taps big red lund never seemed to spook fish.

I tend to use both but it seems like on the dull light days I get more on high vis it might just be I see the strikes better
