Thread: How Does the Passing Front Affect the Bite

Today (Thurs) is the day before the front gets here. The front is suppose to pass on Fri and Sat. Sunday should be the first day after the front passes.

I know there are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking, which day would be the best fishing day this weekend? I am thinking today and Sunday would be best, with Fri and Sat the worst.

Also will a passing front totally shut down the bite, or just slow it down?

It has always been my experience that fishing is best the day before and just before the front hits. In fact, sometimes the fishing is great just as the front arrives. Normally the fishing is much more difficult after a front departs. I've always noted that stable weather is best, doesn't matter what type of weather either, just stable.

I was going to ask the same question. I am headed to BM this weekend for the first time ever and was curious what it would do to the crappie. I believe in general that fronts move them deeper and tighter to structure? As well as slow down the bite some maybe? So, I am very curious as well. If you guys have to fish during the front (Fri or Sat) what tactics do you employ then? Not trying to high jack the thread hoping to add to it some.

Thats an interesting question a buddy and I have been testing that type of theory off and on for about a year + we were last focused on the barometer just prior to rain (we even stayed and fished in the rain lol).... but not so much on frontal movements but we noticed fronts do affect the barometer but not as much as rain.
What we did find is the Barometer we bought (at BPS) would shift usually with-in the course of about half an hour some days 2 or three times but when the Barometer went from HIGH TO LOW is when we did best fishing.

That's it, slow, smaller baits with lots of color. My buddy used to call it the fancy jelly bean method. You know no matter even if you're stuffed with Thanksgiving dinner you can't walk by the bowl without finding out what that green one with the pink dots tastes like.

how true

to me its hard to say. when you only get one day a week to fish you go no matter what. i'm like george i fish every weekend. to me its the winds that make it tuff. hey dean i'll be fishing sunday this weekend. heading to the lakes . tight lines JIM.B

I've noticed one thing, it doesn't seem to affect the river crappie at all.

fancy jelly bean method. Got to love it!! FULL moon this week end? I think I may try BM again. Humps, fish de humps. Them big crackers may still have the last dance.
