Thread: trolling V Bobber

I use fixed on tele canepoles in spring. but deep structure i go with single rod in hand with a slipbobber if im not vertical jigging or casting jigs...Id rather save my minnow money. Not sayin I dont ise them cause i do but usually only every 5 or 6 trips ill spring for 3 dozen

When I was spider rigging I would only use slip bobbers if I knew where the crappie where and I was going to fish a small area. If I was going to move around I would tight line with 1oz sinkers. Now I just pretty much cast and hang two poles over the side. I couldn't tell you the last time I spider rigged.

I'll use slip floats with a lite weight when spider rigging over structure and not moving much if having to move around use 1/2 oz weight without floats.

If I have 2 people in the boat, I push 4 jigs out front with no floats, and pull 4 fixed, floats on cane poles out of the back. I have been casting a lot lately, and would like to make a move to 1 pole eventually.

I am new to spider rigging, but I can only catch crappie over brush piles 12'-18' of water, what I started doing is buying the small plastic/rubber bobber stops but keep them up by the reels, that way when I finally find the fish and what depth I think I can catch them at I will set all rods at same depth, and if I see something that makes me want to change depth I can move the rigs and stops. That has been working for me on the last couple trips.

Monk tought me that at the richmond show last year. I think I'm only going to spider rig when pushing small weighted crankbaits in open water when fish are scattered. It is so much eaiser to throw out two or three slip bobbers than try to hold the 14' rods over deep cover in the wind and boat waves.

For me it depends on the wind, I can troll in a 20 mph wind but I cannot manage the boat with bobbers out in that kind of wind. I like to troll the side that is rough or where the waves are crashing. I troll into the wind and mark all catches if no hits I keep going. If I am picking up a few I return to where the marked fish were and by golly I will say I pick up more in the same spots. I try to maintain 1mph and I hardly ever get the trolling motor up to 3.

I only use bobbers or corks when fishing in shallow water. Or if I'm casting a slip bobber under a bridge or something. Pretty much if you see me spider rigging I am looking for fish, and most likely not doing so hot. It is exciting when catching fish on 2 or 3 poles at a time, but its a royal pain in my arse to have to pack up all of those rods to move to another section of lake.
