    Default west neck 9/8 evening/night

well i didnt get out this morning so my fiance and i tried fishing this evening/night at west landing.... the wind/current was crazy and the water was about a foot or more higher than normal? we were having a rough time trying to keep the boat in one spot to fish so we got back in some sheltered spots and did a little bass fishing. as it got later the wind seemed to die down and we went to one of my "spots" and immediately caught the biggest crappie that we have caught (we are both new to this!) after that fish my fiance got snagged on a MASSIVE tree branch (pretty much a full tree) that has never been there before... leading me to believe that i am not the only one that fishes this spot for crappie. someone must have placed that branch there within the past week in hopes to attract more fish? well after disturbing the big branch it must have scared the fish? then it got pitch dark and out of no where millions of mosquitos started eating us alive! we shot back to the bridge to try and get a couple more crappie but fighting the current was to frustrating so we called it a night! heres some pics...

I fished there once after a hurricane had passed a few days earlier, not sure what I was thinking but I didn't even get a bite. Not sure why the water was so high but at least you caught some fish along with a nice river crappie.

your brave to stay out after dark with all the buzzing going on. i know your just starting crappie fishing but when it cools try the n/w river and you will find more keepers fishing this body of water. alot of us can help you with that river as far as places and patterns. tight lines JIM.B

Good report, nice crappie! It doesnt take but one and you know they are there, you'll come back and wax em next time. I like to use 4 lb test because heavy line or braided line will pull up the structure and spook the fish. Jigs are cheap.. Your fiance didnt look dressed for the skeeters.

neither of us were dressed or prepared for the blood suckers! it was crazy... we didnt last long after they came out before we couldnt take it anymore and went in. as far as test line... i have 4lb test on my pole and she has 8lb on hers. i may look into switching hers back to 4lb but i dont like the look on her face when she has a big fish on and the line snaps! she gets pretty sad... lol

i really want to try the n/w river! last week i ventured out of west neck and into the n/w river and shot all the way down to the bridge where capt. george's used to be. it was a little overwhelming how trying to find good spots for structure cause there was soo many! id love to know of a couple places to try out there and then maybe i can find a few of my own once i know what to look for.
