    Default occoquan report 4-15-12

Got a few hours in this afternoon with my oldest son. Water temps are now above 65 and the logic is they should be in the coves getting lucky. With all of my best efforts I can't locate their happy place in the coves. Skunked last weekend on three trip to the reservoir and was thinking I'd never find the spring crappie.

Day was on track for another skunk. Tried all of the major coves on the dam end of the lake, a few of our favorite brush piles and not even a nibble. Worked our way to a cluster of blow downs that produced a lot of nice fish last year in the deeper waters. The deep end didn't get us anything but hangups. Started tossing the jig in the in the shallow section and after a few missed bites downsized to a smaller jig with a BGBS. Caught three or four small ones Then hooked into a nice one that immediately wrapped itself three times around a branch. Luckily we got it unwound and into the boat and were pleased we found a decent 13in. Name: g and 13in occoquan 4-15-12.jpg

After a few more small ones my son asks to use the big rod. I hand it too him and after a few reminders to not let the tip drop into the water, the rod bends over. Thinking he snagged, I go to grab the rod from him and while looking down I see a monster and scramble for the net. 16.5 inches of pure slab. Sadly I didn't have a scale, however it was easily over 2lbs with a slight chance of being 3lbs. I think the look on his face is a good indicator of the weight.

I can remember when I was 13 years old, a similar situation when my father and I were fishing from shore and I hooked on to a big crappie, I thought I was snagged so I quit fighting the fish, my dad must of seen the line going out as he came running over and helped me pull in one of the biggest crappie I ever caught as a kid. This was 35 years ago and I still remember. You are building life long memories with your son, keep up the good work.
